经过了长远的路途，撒母耳终于来到伯利恒，耶西家的门口。耶西和他的儿子们，恭敬地接待老先知撒母耳。
撒母耳看了一个又一个心里想：「他们之中，哪一个是神要立的王呢?神怎么都说不是呢?」
撒母耳问耶西说：「你只有这七个儿子吗?」
耶西吩咐仆人，到野地去把他最小的儿子──大卫找回来。大卫就把羊群交给阿金叔，飞也似的赶回家去。神对撒母耳说：「就是他，你现在可以用圣膏油倒在他的头上，将来他要作以色列的王。」
有一天，凶恶的非利士人，组成大队军兵，来攻打以色列。扫罗王就率领军队和非利士人对抗。大卫的哥哥们，也被召去打仗。大卫给哥哥们送饼去的时候，看见巨无霸──歌利亚对着以色列军队，大声叫嚷：「你们谁敢出来和我打?不然的话，你们就全部作我们的奴隶。哈!哈!哈!」
以色列人看到歌利亚，心里虽然很气，但是没有一个人敢出去。只有大卫说：「神是我们以色列的帮助。我们不要怕他!」大卫就带着弹弓，跑到河边选了五个小石头，当作武器。歌利亚看到出来迎战的，是一个小男孩，忍不住笑了起来。
「歌利亚，你不要笑，我是奉了神的名，来向你迎战。」歌利亚像一只发狂的野兽，向小大卫冲过来。大卫拉紧了弹弓，「咻」的一声，石头打中了歌利亚的额头。所有的人都吓呆了，小大卫居然打败了歌利亚。
以色列全国上下，都快乐地赞美神。因为大卫精明能干，所以扫罗王封他作战士长。几年以后，扫罗王*，大卫就真的做了以色列的国王。
